Saturn’s Rings Disappearance Observation

Published On : Saturday, 08 November 2025

The Cerapan Fenomena Hilangnya Cincin Planet Zuhal or Saturn’s Rings Disappearance observation was held yesterday at the open area in front of the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah building.

The observation activity was one of the programmes under the Pameran Astronomi: Kaedah Penentuan Awal Bulan Hijri, which was launched on 1 November 2025.

The Pameran Astronomi: Kaedah Penentuan Awal Bulan Hijri runs for a month from 1 to 30 November 2025, and for the first time, it involves collaboration between five agencies and associations, namely BKISHHB, Bahagian Perhubungan Awam, Antarabangsa dan MABIMS (Malaysia, Republik Indonesia dan Republik Singapura), Kementerian Hal Ehwal Ugama; Jabatan Kehakiman Negara; Jabatan Mufti Kerajaan; Jabatan Ukur and Persatuan Astronomi Brunei Darussalam (PABD).

The Fenomena Hilangnya Cincin Planet Zuhal or Saturn’s Rings Disappearance is a rare event that occurs once every 15 years when Saturn is in a position called the equinox, during which its rings appear very faint or may not be visible at all from Earth.

Scientists predict that Saturn’s rings will gradually disappear due to gravitational forces and a process known as “ring rain,” where ice particles fall into the planet’s atmosphere.

“The rings of Saturn will be right in the middle of the sky at 9 p.m., and if the sky is not too cloudy, we will have the opportunity to view them through a telescope,” said PABD member Awang Haji Md. Azri bin Haji Ibrahim.

He also added that the distance between Saturn and Earth is approximately 8.9 Astronomical Units.

In addition, several engaging side activities accompanied the observation event, including camping (glamping), a quiz session (Kahoot), picture-matching activities, colouring, crossword puzzles, Islamic math numbers, and sales booths.

Besides the Pameran Astronomi: Kaedah Penentuan Awal Bulan Hijri, several other side activities will also be held throughout November 2025.
